Hulene Recycling project

When Heidi and Rolland arrived in Mozambique in 1994 one of their main areas of Ministry was the garbage dump –a place where hundreds of people live and gather goods such as metal and paper to recycle and sell.

Iris established a church there and began to help the community with education, feeding programs and small businesses. The church was pulled down by the Government in 2017 after a land slide –all houses and buildings removed in a 200m radius for safety reasons. Since then we have built a community centre and continue to help the community with feeding programs, church meetings and education for the children.

One of the older youth from Hulene (named Serge) approached us about starting a “proper” recycling business –employing youth and the elderly from the garbage dump and compacting the recycling materials and selling to a company. He wrote up a business plan and Iris helped purchase a compactor and a small truck to carry the goods from the garbage dump up onto the main road. Serge has a real heart for this Hulene community and cares for youth, elderly and disadvantaged special needs people.
