"The title of this book comes from Psalm 113:7-8: “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people.” Many of the people Steve records once owned nothing but what they could scavenge from heaps of burned refuse. God called Steve and Ros to them. They have given their whole lives to answer that call. But these are not stories about the generosity of westerners. These are the stories of young people who have given us more than we could ever give them. Their voices deserve to be heard, because one thing I can tell you after living beside them for so long is that these Mozambican brothers and sisters are the most resilient people I have ever come across on the planet. Many of them have been through the unimaginable yet came out on the other side filled with the grace that makes everything in life worthwhile. They might so easily have chosen bitterness, but they did not. They teach us about forgiveness. They teach us about hope. They teach us about pure faith. If you listen to them with an open heart, it seems almost impossible that you wouldn’t be motivated to live with greater love, kindness, and mercy during each day that God gives you on this earth. ""
